Sri Lanka booked their quarterfinal seat in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup from Group-B after beating Afghanistan by 33 runs at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
Sri Lanka started the 11th edition of the youth ODI tournament campaign with an emphatic by 196 runs victory over Canada while Afghanistan concede a 6-wicket defeat against Pakistan.
Replaying to 184 runs in the day’s match, Afghanistan finished their innings 151 for all in 44.5 overs.
Number-8 batsman Waheedullah Shafaq scored the highest run-a-ball 47 including four boundaries and three sixes.
Opening batsman Karim Janat stayed for 40 off 103 balls while skipper Ihsanullah (23 off 35b; 2×4, 1×6) was another double figure scorer for Afghanistan.
Kamidu Mendis grabbed three wickets for 36 runs in eight overs. Charith Asalanka and Damitha Silva took two wickets for 18 and 22 runs respectively.
Opening bat first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka scored 184 for all in 48.1 overs with a skipper Charith Asalanka’s knocked of 71 off 91 balls involving eight boundaries and one six.
Asalanka who was adjudged man of the match, started his batting from 77/3 in 19.5 overs was caught by Zia-ur-Rehman off a Karim Janat bowling at 168/7 in 41.3 overs.
Avishka Fernando was run out scoring 30 off 27 balls including four boundaries and one six.
Number-7 batsman Wanidu de Silva (20 off 25b; 2×4), opener Kaveen Bandara (20 off 36; 3×4), Damitha Silva (14 off 31b; 1×4), Kamindu Mendis (13 off 35b; 2×4) were the other double figure scorers for the Lions.
Shamsurrahman grabbed three wickets for economic 19 runs in 10 overs. Zahir Khan and Karim Janat took two wickets each for 36 and 37 runs in 7 and 8 overs. Zia-ur-Rehman took one wicket for 28 runs in 7.1 overs.
