The senior police officer’s wife, who was murdered in a suspected militant attack, has been buried in Dhaka.
Mahmuda Akhtar, who was married to Superintendent of police Babul Akhtar, was stabbed and shot in the head in the port city of Chittagong on Sunday.
She was on her way to drop her 6-year-old son to a bus stop for school when three men on a motorcycle
attacked her just a few hundred yards from her home. The victim’s brother-in-law said that Mahmuda was buried at graveyard on Sunday night at the capital’s Meradia.
“It was decided that she would be buried in Jhenaidah, but it was changed later,” said Anwar Hossain Labu. Mahmuda’s murder was similar to the killings carried out by extremists over the past two years, police have said, basing their conclusions on witness accounts and CCTV camera footage. Her husband Babul Akhtar, as additional deputy commissioner with the DB in Chittagong, had played a key role in nabbing top militants and led raids in the past two years, busting their hideouts in the southern coastal district.
