Ariful Islam Duke , son of the late councilor of West Bakalia Ward of the port city AKM Jafrul Islam unofficially elected Councilor in by-election of Ward No.17, West Bakalia in the city held on Thursday .
BNP -backed Ariful contested the election with Sweet Pumkin symbol . According to returning officer sources, Ariful Islam wins election with 3,588 votes whereas his nearest AL candidate gets 2,179 votes. Vote casting held peacefully with tight security measures of the law enforcers in 17 polling centres of the ward. Mentionable that immediate past councilor AKM Jafrul Islam expired in a private hospital on April 17 last and hence the by-election was held as per City Corporation Act-2009.
