Sufferings of the middle and low-income groups of people have mounted owing to soaring prices of vegetables in different kitchen markets in Rangpur district during last one month.
Traders alleged that supply of almost all varieties of vegetables is scanty in wholesale markets as recent heavy rainfall that occurred during last few months caused massive havoc to vegetable fields at different areas under the region. As a result production of the same was seriously affected, they further alleged. On the other hand the customers blamed syndicate of the unscrupulous traders who are responsible for the price hike of vegetables as well as other commodities.
At present bitter gourd is being sold at Tk 60 per kg against its previous price of Tk 24 to Tk 30 before, eggplant is selling at Tk 48 to Tk 50 while it was sold at Tk 24 to Tk 30 earlier, Parble(Potol) is sold at Tk 40, long bean(Barboti) at Tk 80 per kg, teasel gourd (Kakrol) is sold at Tk 48 per Kg.
Besides, price of green chilli and garlic is also high in markets. Green chilli is sold at Tk 100 to Tk 120 per kg while it was Tk 40 to Tk 50 before. Per Kg garlic is available at Tk 180 to Tk 200.
Meanwhile, early varieties of winter vegetables have already flooded the markets but price is much high. Per Kg cauliflower is sold at Tk 60, bean at Tk 100 to Tk 120 per kg and cabbage at Tk 40 per Kg.
