Following the conjugal feud a 1.5-year old sleeping child was brutally stabbed to death by its mother in the village Chinguri under Chitalmari Upazila in the district on Sunday midnight.
Chitalmari Police already arrested killer mother Najma. Father Miraj Shaikh was also taken to the police station for interrogation. Police recovered the dead body and the blood stained dagger used for the killing of the child from the place of occurrence.
Police and the locals said that about 5/6 years ago Miraj Shaikh, son of one Abdul Hakim of the village married Najma, daughter of neighbouring Ayub Ali. Just after their marriage conjugal quarrel became a regular feature in between the husband and wife.
At one stage Najma registered a case with the court against the husband. As a result, the quarrel tuned into climax and following the quarrel mother Najma stabbed her 1.5 years old daughter Mira on Sunday at night at 11 pm. Police visited the place of occurrence, recovered the dead body and the blood stained dagger and sent the dead body to the morgue for autopsy. Both husband and wife made statements to the police accusing each other. A number injuries were found on the dead body. But police suspected Najma to be the killer.
Neighbours said, at the night both husband and wife were sleeping on separate cots and the baby was with Najma. At about 11 pm wife Najma rushed to neighbouring house where she cried out loudly and told that her husband had killed her baby. Being informed of the matter police rushed to the spot, arrested both husband and wife, recovered the blood stained dagger and the dead body.
In the following morning Hayatul Islam, Addititional Police Super of Bagerhat visited the place of occurrence. Following the incident various questions were raised in the minds of the local people.
Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, Officer-in-charge of Chitalmari PS told, both father and mother were arrested on the charge killing their baby.
