The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) on Tuesday approved the ‘Higher Secondary Stipend Project’ involving TK 513 crore under which the government will provide stipend to some 17.03 lakh poor students at the higher secondary level aimed at averting dropouts as well encouraging them
in science education.
The approval was given at the weekly Ecnec meeting held at the NEC Conference Room with Ecnec Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said a total of six development projects, including the higher secondary stipend project, were approved with an outlay of Tk 1,347 crore to be entirely borne by the national exchequer. Of the total six approved projects, five are new while one is revised project.
Among the total students studying at higher secondary level across the country, around 40 percent female students and 10 percent male students will be given the stipend under ‘Higher Secondary Stipend Project’.
The Planning Minister said, about 17.03 lakh students will be given stipend in two categories in science and other sections.
A student from science section would get a monthly stipend of Tk 175 and tuition fee of Tk 50 along with Tk 1,600 at a time for procuring books and bearing examination fee, he said.
Besides, a student selected from other sections would be provided with Tk 125 as stipend and Tk 50 as tuition fee per month alongside the one-time allocation of Tk 1,200 for buying books and bearing examination fee.
AHM Mustafa Kamal hoped that the initiative would help reduce the dropouts at higher secondary level as well as encourage the students in science education.
The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary will implement the project by June, 2017.
