The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) on Tuesday approved the expansion of the existing grid interconnection capacity (500MW) of Bangladesh (Bheramara)-India (Baharampur) grid inter connection project with Tk 1,404.80 crore in a bid to import additional 500 MW of power from India.
The approval was given at the 24th Ecnec meeting of the current fiscal year held at the NEC conference room in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan said a total of six development projects were approved yesterday with a total outlay of Tk 52,778.11 crore. “Of the total project cost, Tk 40,481.75 crore will come from the national exchequer, Tk 117.76 crore from the organisation’s own fund while the rest of Tk 12,178.60 crore as project assistance.”
Of the six projects, four are new while two are revised, Mannan said.
He said, Power Grid Company Bangladesh Limited (PGCB) will implement the Bangladesh (Bheramara)-India (Baharampur) grid inter connection project by June 2018 with the Asian Development Bank providing Tk 844.88 crore for it as project assistance.
The project aims to import additional 500 MW of power from India through enhancing the capacity of the existing Bangladesh (Bheramara)-India (Bahramour) grid inter connection and thus meeting up the growing demand of power for Bangladesh’s ensuring socio-economic development.
Under the project, there will be construction of 12 km
Bheramara-Ishwardi 230 KV double circuit transmission line, including river crossing, construction of Bheramara 500 MW HVDC back-to-back sub station (2nd module) .
The Ecnec meeting approved another project titled ‘Tripura (India)-Comilla south substation (Bangladesh) grid interconnection project with Tk 179.45 crore. PGCB will implement the project by June 2016 under which Bangladesh would import 100 MW of power from Palatana power station of Tripura through Comilla south power substation.
Under the project, there will be construction of 43 km transmission line at Tripura (India)-Comilla south power substation as well as the expansion of two 132 KV bay at the Comilla South Power Substation.
The State Minister said, there would be scope for further raising its capacity.
Answering to a question, MA Mannan said the import of power from India through this grid interconnection would be a win-win situation for both Bangladesh and India.
The Ecnec meeting also gave nod to the revised ‘Health, Population and Nutrition Sector Development Programme (HPNSDP) revised’ with Tk 51,082.41 crore downsizing it from the original project cost of Tk 56,993.54 crore.
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is implementing the project across the country with its various subordinate organisations by June 2016 with some 13 foreign agencies, including WB, JICA, EC, DFID, SIDA, CIDA, USAID, WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, GIZ, KfW, UNAIDS and GAVI-HSS as its development partners.
Asked about the downsizing of the project cost for HPNSDP, Mannan said some of the development partners of this mega project has downsized their commitments.
The other projects approved at the meeting are BSCIC Industrial Estate, Srimangal (1st revised) project with TK 40.14 crore, Roumari-Tura land port road construction project with Tk 35.07 crore and farming and research of Kuchia and crabs in selected areas of Bangladesh with Tk 36.24 crore.
Ministers and State Ministers attended the meeting. Planning Commission members and secretaries concerned were also present.
