Adabor police Sub Inspector Ratan Kumar Hawlader, accused of sexual harassment, has been given bail as the plaintiff chose not to oppose his bail petition.
Dhaka’s Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal 4 Judge Saleh Uddin Ahmed granted the bail on Monday.
Tribunal clerk Forkan Miah told bdnews24.com, “The defendant has reached an understanding with the plaintiff. His wife is ill (pregnant). So, the plaintiff did not object to his bail.”
Plaintiff’s lawyer Asaduzzaman Helali
confirmed the version. Hawlader’s Lawyer Saidur Rahman Manik told bdnews24.com, “The judge has given permanent bail on a Tk 10,000 bail bond.”
Hawlader was suspended after the victim had filed a complaint following an incident on January 31st.
The victim, a private university student and the wife of a Juba Dal leader, accused SI Hawlader of sexually harassing her in the pretext of conducting a search.
She said that Hawlader had stopped her while she was returning home on a rickshaw and ordered her to go to a nearby shop where he did the “search”.
She said her repeated requests that the search be done by a woman officer or conducted in the presence of women of the neighbourhood or in a police station had been ignored by the SI.
