Sholakia terror suspect on 10-day remand

Staff Reporter :A Kishoreganj court on Monday placed Jahidul Haq alias Tanim, an alleged militant involved in Sholakia attack on a 10-day remand. Tanim was detained over the Eid-day attack near Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj that left four people dead, including two policemen. Chief Judicial Magistrate Abdus Salam Khan passed the order after Officer-in-Charge of Kishoreganj Sadar Police and investigation officer of the case Morshed Jahan produced him (Tanim) before the court. The suspect Jahidul Haq alias Tanim, 24, is the son of Abdus Sattar of Paschim Tarapasha in Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila. The court also ordered to produce another suspect Shariful Islam alias Shafiul Islam alias Saiful Islam alias Abu Mokaddel, 22, before it soon after his recovery from injuries. Shariful received bullet injuries during a gunfight between police and the attackers, which followed by a bomb attack around 9:00am on the police check post only a minutes before the Eid prayers at Sholakia Eidgah. Two policemen were killed in the attack while the law enforcers gunned down one the attackers. Stray bullet during the exchange of fire had killed a woman at a nearby house. On Sunday, three days after the incident, Mohammad Shamsuddin, Sub-Inspector of Pakundia Police Station filed a case under Anti-terrorism Act. Mir Mosharraf Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Kishoreganj Model Police Station said the body of Abir Rahman, a student of North South University and a suspected militant who was killed in a shootout with police was kept at Bajitpur Zahurul Islam Medical College Hospital morgue. Accused Shariful is being treated at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, while Zahidul was kept in police custody. Police recovered two firearms, two local made weapons, two rounds of bullets and four magazines from the spot. Shariful Islam alias Shafiul Islam alias Saiful Islam, son of Abdul Hye of Ghoraghat Upazila in Dinajpur, is one of the two suspects arrested following the last week’s attack on the police check post at Sholakia. He is the same person accused in the murder of a Hindu priest at Debiganj in Panchagarh, police said. Debiganj police said, Shariful Islam had been named as a “JMB operative” and the No.10 accused in the charge-sheet filed at a Pachagarh court on June 28. Shariful also goes by fictitious names such as Shariful Ialam, Saiful Islam, Abu Mokaddel, ‘Don’ and ‘Sohan’, according to Kishoreganj and Debiganj police. RAB personnel detained Shariful with bullet wound and with a gun right after the attack. Now, police said, they are able to confirm that Shariful was one of the three motorcycle-riding assailants who slit the throat of priest Jagneshwar Roy, 50, after hacking him with sharp weapons in the early hours of February 21. On July 7, the Eid day, four people, including two policemen, were killed and 12 others injured in a bomb attack coupled with an exchange of gunfire after terrorists attacked a temporary police check post near the Sholakia Eidgah.
