Exports up by 8.55 pc in July: Shipments of footwear, leather goods advance

Bangladesh fetched $3.88 billion from exports in July, the first month of the current fiscal year, on the back of growing apparel shipments.
However, exports in July advanced by 8.55 per cent compared with the corresponding month of the previous fiscal, according to the latest figure of Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) released on Monday.
Earlier, the government set a $45.50 billion export target in the current fiscal year (2019-20).
The latest export figure shows that the apparel sector, the largest contributor to the nation’s exports, earned $3.31 billion in July, registering a 9.7 per cent growth over the corresponding month of the previous fiscal.
Of the total export earnings by the apparel sector, knitwear products earned $1.68 billion and woven products earned $1.63 billion during the period under review.
Bangladesh earned $34.12 billion from apparel export in the last fiscal year and the apparel shipments during the period registered an 11.49 percent year-on-year growth.
Of the amount, $16.88 billion came from knitwear and $17.24 billion from woven garment products.
In June this fiscal, exports of leather products increased by 61.79 per cent to $24.1 million, footwear by 9.22 per cent to $72.35 million, while leather export came down by 3.37 per cent to $9.74 million.
Besides, export earnings from jute and jute goods totalled at $74.88 million, registering a meager growth of 0.83 per cent.
Bangladesh fetched $40.53 billion from merchandise exports in the last fiscal year (2018-19), growing by 10.55 per cent year-on-year.
The earnings were 3.94 per cent higher than the annual target of $39 billion in 2018-19.
In 2017-18, Bangladesh exported goods worth $36.66 billion.
