The Indian government has honoured Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Prize-2020 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to social, economic and political transformation through non-violent and other Gandhian methods.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today handed over the Gandhi Peace Prize to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s younger daughter Sheikh Rehana.
He took the award from Narendra Modi along with his elder sister Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the occasion of Bangabandhu’s birth centenary and golden jubilee of independence at the National Parade Ground on Friday.
Speaking as the guest of honour on the occasion, Narendra Modi said, “It is also a matter of pride for India that we have been able to present the Gandhi Peace Prize to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.”
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been awarded the 2020 Gandhi Peace Prize. The jury for Gandhi Peace Prize is chaired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and comprises of two ex-officio members, the Chief Justice of India and Leader of the single largest Opposition Party in Lok Sabha.
Indian media have seen the price as a sign of friendship between the two countries.
A statement from the Indian Ministry of Culture said that the Government of India has nominated Bangabandhu for his outstanding contribution to the social, economic and political transformation of Bangladesh in the same way that Mahatma Gandhi has led the way in non-violence.
The award is given for Gandhi’s non-violent policy and for his contribution to social, economic and political change. The award carries an amount of Rs 1 crore, a citation, a plaque, and an exquisite traditional handicraft or handloom item.
Earlier, South African leader Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere received the Gandhi Peace Prize.
