Though she has been suffering from cancer for last five years noted singer Shammi Akhter tries to render songs still now. She always feels comfortable to render songs in Bengali. Sometimes she is seen to perform in different channel’s live musical shows. She tries to render songs now.
Shammi Akhter got her first training in music from Ustad Goura Babu of Barisal. Later she received training from many others. She started her play-back career through Azizur Rahman’s movie ‘Oshikkhito.’ Gazi Mazharul Anwar written two songs ‘Achhi jemon achhi temon robo Bou hobonarey’ and ‘Dhaka shohor aishya aamar asha puraichhey’ became super-hit during that time. Satya Saha composed music of these two songs. These two songs brought her into limelight. Later she rendered 300 songs.
While talking about her music career Shammim Akhter told this correspondent, “My father Shamsul Karim was my inspiration in music. My mother Rabeya Karim always also inspired in my whole career. My husband Akramul Islam also gave me. Everybody pray for me as I can remain well.”
Today is Shammi Akhter’s birthday; she has no plan to celebrate the day. She tied the nuptial knot with Akramul Islam on February 22, 1977. She is mother of Komol and Sazia. She got the National Film Award in 2010.
