Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shah Ali Police Station AKM Shaheen Mondol was closed on Friday following the death of a tea-vendor after being burnt during an alleged extortion attempt in the city’s Mirpur area.
The OC was closed a day after suspension of four policemen of the same police station.
Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Maruf Hossain Sarder said that the OC was closed in connection with Wednesday night’s incident at Gudaraghat in Mirpur-1. The policemen were suspended as part of measures to carry out a fair investigation into the incident, he said.
He also said that the policemen were attached to Rajarbagh Police Lines after their suspension.
Tea-vendor Babul Matabbar, 45, succumbed to his burn injuries at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Thursday after struggling for life for hours with almost 95 percent burn injuries in his body.
He suffered burn injuries as a policeman allegedly hit his kerosene stove when he refused to pay toll to him on Wednesday night. Under the influence of the hit, the stove exploded instantly and his body caught fire.
Babul’s daughter Ruksana later filed a case against seven people.
Two committees were formed over the incident — one by Dhaka Metropolitan Police Headquarters and the other by Mirpur division of police.
The death of the tea-vendor has drawn criticism even from Parliament and the ruling party. Different quarters expressed surprised over the incident and the audacity of police. They demanded exemplary punishment of the policemen those who were involved in the barbaric incident.
Ruling Awami League senior leader Suranjit Sengupta on Friday insisted on the trial of the policemen involved in the incident within a month. Speaking at a discussion in city, he said that it was a sensational incident and the perpetrators of the murder of Babul be brought to book within a month.
He demanded that action be taken against the policemen under Section 302 of Bangladesh Penal Code. He said that the police in whom people repose their trust are involved in the case.
“What is there to investigate? Bring this case to speedy tribunal as soon as possible. Uphold law and order by announcing verdict within a month,” he pronounced.
Meanwhile, BNP standing committee member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman termed the police force as enemy of the people. The force has been turned into a killing force. The force is now an enemy force under the guise the friend, he added.
Speaking at a discussion in city, he said that the police force itself is engaged in terrorism and it has been proven once again by the killing of Babul. “People are frightened by the heinous, ruthless and daring terrorist activities of the Awami misrule,” he added.
The BNP leader observed that repressive and heinous acts by police are pushing the country towards a state of extreme anarchy. He demanded exemplary punishment and legal action against the policemen involved in the murder of Babul.
