The country’s primary and high school premises on Friday wore a festive look as students from class-I to class-IX thronged their respective educational institutions to collect new books.
With the flavour of new textbooks from the very first day of their academic year 2016, the students became happy and many of them were seen smelling the new books.
The government is distributing 33,37,62,760 textbooks among 4,44,16,728 students of pre-primary to secondary level for 2016 academic session across the country.
With slogan of ‘We will bud with flavour of new book’ students along with their parents started coming to the school from 8:00am when the playground was still enveloped in mist.
The textbook distribution will continue for the next seven days.
So the schools that are yet to start admitting new students will have to hand the new books over to their pupils within this period.
Since 2010, the government has been distributing free textbooks among students of secondary schools. Free distribution of books among the primary school students began in 1981.
The new books awaited the students at schools across the country as they woke up to the first morning of 2016 to celebrate “Textbook Festival Day”. They were beaming with joy as they were handed over those textbooks for the new academic session.
Some held those up in the air with joy while some were flipping through the pages. The refreshing smell of new books hung in the air all around the schools.
“I’m very happy as I have got the new books on Tuesday. I like to take smell of the flavour of new textbooks,” said Maisha Haque, Abonti, a student of Amzad Ali Sarkar Pilot Girls High School and College at Tongi in Gazpur district.
In capital Dhaka, education minister Nurul Islam Nahid inaugurated the festival at Government Laboratory School in the morning through distributing new sets of textbooks among students to ensure a globally accreditable standard of education for the citizens of Bangladesh.
Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated the distribution of free textbooks among students through giving books to some students of different schools and madrasahs at a simple ceremony at her official residence Ganohaban.
Nurul Islam Nahid said they want to ensure globally accreditable standard of education in a bid to build the new generation with modern education and technological knowledge.
“I’m urging the teachers and guardians of students to do whatever necessary to shape the young minds as a patriotic, sincere and disciplined generation to compete with the world,” he said.
In Rajshahi, primary and secondary level students have started getting new books in festive mood in the city and nine upazilas of the district like other parts of the country yesterday, the first day of the new year 2016.
According to the sources concerned, book distribution ceremony has been arranged in each of the schools to handover books among the students.
District and upazila level officials’ concerned, public representative and local elites were present at all their respective ceremonies to inspire the students.
In Rajshahi city, divisional, metropolitan and district level high officials launched the book distribution activities formally at a function held at PTI Primary School.
In Narail, Primary and secondary students have started getting new books in festive mood in the district like other parts of the country yesterday, the first day of the new year 2016. Book distribution ceremony has been arranged in each of the schools to handover books among the students.
In Gaibandha, free books distribution festival was held in all the academic institutions at Primary and Secondary levels including Madrashas of the district yesterday.
A ceremony on free text books distribution to the students organized by district primary education office was held on the premises of Gaibandha Collegiate Government Primary School of the town here at around 10 am.
