SC scraps Mamun’s acquittal in graft case

The Supreme Court on Sunday scrapped the much-talked-about High Court Judgement that had acquitted businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun in a corruption case.
A Special Judge’s Court on October 27, 2008 had sentenced Mamun to 10 years’ of imprisonment and fined Tk 10 lakh for accumulating property worth Tk 101.73 crore beyond his known source of income.
In response to an appeal, the HC on July 30, 2012 acquitted Mamun from the corruption charges.
The Appellate Division led-by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha on Sunday cancelled the HC verdict and ordered it to hold further hearing on Mamun’s appeal, Anti-Corruption Commission lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told The New Nation.
Mamun, also well known as a friend and business partner of Tarique Rahman, Senior Vice-Chairman of BNP and the elder son of former prime minister and opposition leader Begum Khaleda Zia.
Several cases were lodged against Mamun and Tarique on Mar 7, 2007, during the State of Emergency.
Later, after securing a bail from the Supreme Court, Tarique went to the UK citing medical reasons. He has been in London ever since.
