The inhabitants of Sandwip, an island of the country will get electricity and internet facilities from December.
A total of 90 percent works of setting up 80 kilometers sub marine cables beneath the Bay of Bengal has been completed by Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) at a cost of Taka 144 crore.
PDB sources said, in the first phase 10 megawatts electricity will be supplied per day among 10 thousand people of Sandwip from December.
ZTT, a Chinese construction firms had been implementing the project from December 2017. PDB has embarked upon the project styled as “Development of Electric Supply System in Chattogram Region” in order to merge Sandwaip island with the national power grid, PDB sources said.
Prabir Kumar Sen, Chief Engineer of PDB Chattogram south region told BSS that two nearly 20 feet high-powered cable networks from the ground level one at Sitakunda part and another in Sandwip region have already been installed and connected with Sandwip channel. Prabir said two headline cables at Sandwip with 16 Kilometer and Sitakundu and 10 kilometer has already been installed with three core optical fiber in each headline under 15 feet deep under the sea.
Sources said a total of 60 megawatts electricity will be able to transmit by the two cables in next 50 years.
Under the project, a substation and two transformers have been set up and a total of 1,500 polls out of 1,800 have already been set up, the chief engineer said.
PDB now supplies one megawatt electricity among 2,000 subscribers from 6 pm to 12 PM in some parts of Sandwip Island through a generator and solar panels.
The government has taken up the mega project to cope with the growing demand of electricity in sandwip, the sources added.
