A section of protesting students from different universities formed human chain demanding road safety for third consecutive day in the capital and some other places in the country on Thursday.
About 300 students formed their human chain on Pragati Sarani in front of the Jamuna Future Park at Basundhara in the capital around 1pm and continued till 4pm.
They chanted slogans for safe road and exemplary punishment to the killers of Abrar and others were killed in different road accidents
The agitating students said that they would continue their peaceful protest until March 28 as per their declaration and would take their next steps depending on government’s actions in this regard.
When asked about their programme after talks with Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam, a student of American International University of Bangladesh said, “If we withdraw our demonstrations, our demands will not be translated into action.”
However, no untoward incident took place there, said Abu Baker Siddique, Officer-in-Charge of Gulshan Police Station.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi University and Chittagong University students on Thursday demonstrated expressing solidarity with the protesters in Dhaka.
Students of Rajshahi University staged demonstration for one-and a half hours blocking Rajshahi-Dhaka Highway in protest in the morning. They took to the street around 9:30am near the campus’ main gate and waited there till 11:00am.
Several hundred students of Chittagong University formed a human chain in the university’s Central Shaheed Minar in the morning.
Apart from demanding justice for the death of BUP student Abrar, they are also protesting the accident of one of their fellows Wednesday night.
Fourth year student Mehedi Hasan was injured after a speedy vehicle hit him on the campus gates on Wednesday night, said Assistant Sub-Inspector Alauddin Talukder of Chattogram Medical Collge and Hospital’s Police Outpost.
On Wednesday, the students gave the authority a seven-day ultimatum to realise their eight-point demands after the death of Bangladesh University of Professionals student Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury on Tuesday in a road accident there on zebra crossing.
The students blocked the busy Pragati Sarani immediately after the incident on Tuesday and the protest spread across the country on Wednesday as the students from other educational institutions joined the movement and took to the street halting traffic movement.
After a meeting with Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam, a section of students postponed their protest programme but others disagreed.
