JU correspondent :
The Jahangirnagar University (JU) which is known as ‘safe heaven’ for providing safe sanctuary for the migratory birds is ready to welcome them.
During the winter, thousands of migratory birds come to the evergreen campus from Siberia, China, Himalayans, Mongolia, Xinxian, and other cold territories in search of a safe habitat and food.
The mist-covered green landscape, which has 13 small and large waterbodies, gives the campus a blissful look to draw the foreign birds and human guests.
The JU authorities have taken steps to make the campus environment congenial. They have also removed unnecessary plants that are considered unsuitable for the habitation of the migratory birds.
Abdur Rahman Babul, deputy registrar (estate) of JU, said, we have already made the water bodies prepared for the foreign birds. We will set up wire-fencing so that the human visitors can’t disturb them.
‘The area from Kabir Sarani to Chourangi Point will be declared a sanctuary for migratory birds where billboards, banners and festoons will be installed at different points to raise public awareness’, he said.
The university may organise a bird fair on the campus observing the pandemic situation, told Prof Kamrul Hasan of the zoology department.
Various events, such as inter-university bird identification competition, decoration of stall competition, oratory competition, bird painting competition for children, arrangements for children to watch migratory birds from different spots with telescopes, quiz competition, discussions and a cultural sessions relating to birds, will be included in the daylong programme, he said. Around 15 species of migratory birds come to JU every year. Boro Sorali which is known as greater whistling ducks and Chhoto Sorali which is known as the lesser whistling ducks are found more in JU lakes than other species.
Every year, a vast amount of passionate bird loving people gather on the university campus to watch the migratory birds, their chirping and fluttering near the lakes.
