Several hundred students of Rajshahi University and Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology on Monday blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway once again demanding quota reformation in government jobs.
The students of the universities blocked the highway in front of the universities main entrances in the morning as a part of the central programme in support of their five-point demand including reduction of quota to 10 percent from the existing 56 percent in government jobs.
Campus sources said, several thousand RU students took position at the various points of the university including in front of the all academic and administrative buildings and started demonstration.
Due to the students’ demonstration, no class was held and none of the university bus left the campus.
Later, the agitating students brought out a protest procession on campus at 9am and took position in front of the university main entrance. The demonstrators continued sit-in programme till 3:30pm. Masud Monnaf, convener of RU unit quota reform movement, told New Nation that they blocked the highway protesting against the attack upon the agitating students demanding reformation of quota in government jobs on Sunday night across the country, and demanding revision of the quota system. RU proctor Professor Md Lutfor Rahman told New Nation that they asked the students to hold a peaceful demonstration. “We also requested the law enforcers not to go into any action against the students”, he also added.
