Rooppur NPP purchse scam HC rejects bail plea of contractor Shahadat Hossain in 2 cases

The High Court on Sunday refused to grant bail to Md Shahadat Hossain, owner of Sazin Construction Limited, a supplier company, in two cases filed on charges of procurement irregularities in the Green City Housing Project at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.
The HC bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain passed the order after holding a virtual hearing on the petition placed by Shahadat’s lawyers seeking bail in the cases.
Senior advocate Barrister Shafiq Ahmed took part in the hearing on behalf of Shahadat Hossain, advocate AKM Fazlul Haque appeared in the hearing for Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Attorney General Mahbubuey Alam and Deputy Attorney general Dr Md Bashirullah appeared for the state.
Barrister Shafiq Ahmed confirmed the news that the High Court refused to grant bail to Shahadat Hossain.
In its order, the bench said the lawyer for the accused might place the bail petition before it after the court resumes its regular functions, which has been suspended following the coronavirus outbreak.
Earlier on December 12, 2019, a Dhaka Court sent Md Shahadat Hossain and 12 others in jail in four cases filed by the ACC on charges of procurement irregularities in the Green City Housing Project at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.
The other accused are— former Pabna PWD Executive Engineer Md Masudul Alam, Pabna Public Housing Division Deputy Assistant Engineer Md Zahidul Kabir, Deputy Divisional Engineers Md Shafiqul Islam, Ahmed Sazzad Khan, Mostafa Kamal, Estimator and Deputy Assistant Engineer Sumon Kumar Nandi, Assistant Engineers Md Tareque Khan, Aminul Islam, Abu Syed, Rowshan Ali, Tahajjud Hossain and supplier company Majid and Sons’ owner Asif Hossain.
The ACC arrested the accused people on December 12, 2019, after filing four cases with the ACC integrated office in Pabna against them over incidents of embezzling Tk 310 million.
The commission later produced them in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nivana Khair Jessy.
On October 17, the commission formed a committee to investigate the alleged procurement irregularities at the RNPP Green City Housing project.
According to the ACC investigation, the PWD showed that each of the pillows cost Tk 5,957 with an additional cost of Tk 760 for lifting it while each electric stove cost Tk 7,747 with Tk 6,650 additional lifting cost.
