Faruque Ahmed :
Teachers are indeed the backbone of a nation. A good teacher is always a source of infinite inspiration to his/her students. A committed teacher can push his/her students to acquire knowledge, intellect, wisdom and above all can show the path of honesty, integrity to be a worthy person to contribute to the society and the country as well.
I feel myself fortunate to have few extraordinary and talented teachers in my primary and secondary school level to whom I am indebted in my whole life. Apart from being scholars in their subjects, they were also very good and decent human being as well.
First of all I respectfully remember my teacher Mr Abdul Malek Chowdhury who was the Headmaster of my primary school at my native village Malihata during my study in the school. Apart from imparting lessons to me in the school, he had liking for me for my good manners and respect shown towards all teachers and senior students of the school. Though he had good command in all subjects, he had special fascination for English teaching to which I was very much fond of right from my schooling. He had innovative techniques in teaching his subjects, to which, we the students got immense pleasure and interest. He could motivate his students with love and affection and easy way of narrating the subject matters to his students. Because of my interest in English, Headmaster Malek Chowdhury used to give special attention to my lessons so that my interest in this subject can further grow unhindered. Sometime he used to teach me English beyond the usual class in the school. My learning process in the school was a bit different. How much fruitful I don`t know, but I had a habit of enquiring things to the teachers on verities of subjects around me. In this connection I gratefully acknowledge that my favourite teacher, Mr Malek Chowdhury never showed any reluctance or annoyance in answering to my innumerable queries I made to him during my boyhood in the primary school. Long time after leaving the primary school, during my college years, I would go to his place for courtesy visits, I could feel that he would be so pleased and happy to see me and in turn I would get divine pleasure of meeting my respected teacher. In this connection I also remember with respect my two teachers in the primary school, – Mr Altaf Ali and Mr Abdul Latif who tried their best in giving lessons to the students of the school.
After completion of primary education at the school at our village, I got my admission in class VI at Sarail Annada High school in the early part of 1960. In the high school, as it seemed to me, a different world with big and huge class rooms, hundreds of students clamouring for the whole day around me. As many as 170 students got admitted in class VI having three sections.
In those days, I remember our school was surrounded with big green mango trees and other varieties of green trees having a very beautiful look with a big tank at western side. I was overwhelmed with joy to find innumerable number of classmates and friends around me. Students coming from far off villages with different attitude, tastes, manners and above all with different ideas, intellects and innovations. I was extremely charmed and fascinated to see so huge accumulation of talented boys and girls admitted in our class. Our class consisted of three sections, myself was allotted with section- A.
When our class started in the high school, it was an amazing experience to observe that the teachers were highly educated, genius, experienced and matured in their intellect, in wisdom and above all highly capable of imparting quality teaching to the students. Almost all teachers were trained sufficiently and with the abundance of human qualities apart from giving lessons to the students in the high school. My favourite teachers were few, for whom I had infinite respect and regards for their outstanding teaching capabilities, personality and above all possessing human qualities. In this connection most respectfully I remember my most favourite teacher Mr Hemendra Chandra Roy, the then Headmaster of Sarail Annada High school. He was an extraordinarily talented and highly gifted English teacher of his time. He used to take up English class for the beginners, i.e. for the students of class VI in order to have a solid foundation of English grammar and language to the boys and girls right from the start of schooling. Afterwards, he would take up English class from class nine to ten for high achievement and successful finishing of the lesson in the subject in order to derive the best benefit and good results in the public exam. Apart from being an extraordinary English teacher, he was the best administrator of his time and would run the school in an excellent and best disciplined way. Besides, he was considered as a legendary teaching personality of his time in the greater Comilla district for which we would feel proud to be his students. I cannot control my temptation to cite one example of his sharp memory. At the function arranged on the celebration of 100 hundred years of establishment of our school in the year 1993, it was our big fortune that the old students of this school could bring our Headmaster Mr Hemendra Roy from Agartala, India (then residing with his son over there) to this great event. It was a very successful function attended by huge number of old students and enthusiasts. After the function was over, I visited his house (his old home at Ali Nagar) on way to my home.
