Hard to believeAccording to a newspaper report, only two candidates qualified for admission into the Honours’ course in English Department at Dhaka University, and all others failed. Those who became unsuccessful, most of them got GPA-A and Golden GPA in the SSC and the HSC examinations. The admission seekers’ poor result at the Dhaka University, Kha Unit, admission test reflects the real standard of education in the country much the government claims complacency with the SSC and the HSC results.Observers label students and teachers’ poor knowledge in English grammar. The neglect to learn English is also one of the reasons. If any one wants to learn English, he seldom gets patron but detractor. There are 31 branches in English grammar of which eight branches are must for a learner. I can say, a large number of students, teachers and people of other professions can not justify their knowledge in English what their position demands.So, in order to improve the situation, emphasis must be given on learning the English grammar first and with some degree of competence or accuracy.Khurshida HaqueDhakaToo many recordsWe are a nation who loves to make records which could be included in the Gunnies Book of World Records.On December16, 2013 Bangladesh made worlds largest human flag and on March 26, 2014 we made another world record, –2.5 lakh people sang the national anthem together. We spent a huge amount of money for organising these two events.We heard that crores of Taka has been spent for singing the national anthem.Now we are going to make another world record, the Prime Minister has gone to US with 185-member delegation which is the largest in the history of Bangladesh. Hard earned money of the people being incurred for the pleasure trip of many who have no role to play in the United Nations General Assembly, who will rather spend their time shopping, sight seeing and relaxing in the luxuries.This is simply misuse of public money and time, which could be used otherwise in public good.Nur JahanChittagong
