Speaking in the condolence meeting of Rashed Suhrawardy on Tuesday, Dr Kamal Hossain claimed that the Constitution was violated by ‘depriving’ the country’s 16 crore people of their rights in the December-30 election.
The meeting was organized by Gonoforum on Rashed Suhrawardy, son of former Prime Minister of erstwhile Pakistan Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, at the Jatiya Press Club. He said they will do whatever is needed in this regard. In the programme, Barrister Mainul Hosein, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President (Rab) ASM Abdur Rab, BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Abdul Moin Khan, and Founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury spoke.
When asked, what you will do now? Dr Kamal Hossain, the top leader of Oikyafront and President of Gonoforum, said that “We will do whatever is needed in this regard.”
Describing democracy as the main principle of the Constitution, Dr Kamal said the country’s people had struggled for it. “But people are calling what happened on December 30 a farce and a drama. This can be called cheating with people. It’s pity why it was done.”
Rashed Suhrawardy died in London on February 7 last.
Barrister Mainul Hosein said, Rashed Suhrawardy was one of us, yet he was sadly neglected because democratic politics of Suhrawardy was flouted.
Rashed played a very helpful role in London in the cause of Liberation War, but was not given any credit as freedom fighter. He also did not seek any recognition. He was conscious of his sensitivity as son of a great leader, he said.
Barrister Mainul Hosein added to say that Rashed had financial difficulties, but he never sought help from anybody. He could not become barrister for money. Bangladesh could have used him to a great advantage but he was not among us. That was the policy.
Everywhere democracy is the accepted modern day politics, but in Bangladesh we are defeated before the bureaucratic politics. We have no politics, political leadership and bureaucratic machinery robbed our vote. Nothing could be more shameful for a free nation.
Barrister Hosein was unhappy that the Awami League government did not arrange to bring his body here for burial. We lost a great soul.
ASM Abdur Rab said, there is a confusion whether the democracy after vote piracy on December 29 midnight, will return soon and sustain in Bangladesh or not?
“Today’s Bangladesh is a big prison. Thousands of innocent people are imprisoned. Without united movement, it would not possible to free them.”
Rab said, the ruling party does not believe in humanity and democracy. Even they do not believe in the power of people.
He said, in the country there is no rule of law, no democratic values. Even, when the date of Khaleda Zia’s cases is fixed, it is done from different quarter.
Dr Abdul Moin Khan said, Rashed Suhrawardy believed in moderate democracy like his father Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy.
Moin Khan said, today’s Bangladesh politics are full of jealousy and bad mind. We are here to build the country with love, prosperity and the sprit of our constitution.
Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury said, Rashed Suhrawardy was too polite person. He was a Bengali by his heart and mind.
Dr Zafrullah said, also there is no respect for opposition’s voice, because politics lost its real characteristics in the country. Once upon a time, politics used to serve the people, now it is business.
He said, there is no confidence of people in the judiciary. Without judiciary, a country can not run in a right way.
Gonoforum Secretary General Mostafa Mohsin Montu moderated the programme. Gonoforum Executive President Shubrata Chowdhury, Mukabbir Khan, Amsa Amin, and Jaglul Hayder Afrik, among others, were present.
