Rashed Chisty’s bail in money laundering case cancelled

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday scrapped a High Court verdict that granted bail to Rashedul Haque Chishty, son of former chairman of Farmers Bank audit committee Mahbubul Haque Chisty, in a money laundering case involving Tk 159 crore.
The apex court also directed the trial court concerned to finish the trial proceedings of the case expeditiously.
A full bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after holding hearing on two separate petitions filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission and Rashedul.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the leave to appeal petition challenging a High Court verdict that granted bail to Rashedul in the case.
Advocate AF Hassan Ariff appeared in the court on behalf of Rashedul Haque Chisty, while advocate Khurshid Alam Khan represented the ACC.
The High Court on January 26 this year granted bail to Rashedul Haque in the case. Later the ACC filed appeal petition against the bail order.
The ACC filed the case with Gulshan Police Station in April, 2018 against Rashedul, his father Mahbubul Haque Chisty, mother Rozi Chishty, and sister Rimi Chishty and few others on charges of laundering Tk 159 crore.
Mahbubul and Rashedul are now in jail while Rozi Chishty and Rimi Chishty are on bail in the case.
Lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said the trial of the case has already been started in the lower court and 11 witnesses have already testified.
Farmers Bank was established in June 2013, while investigations of Bangladesh Bank found massive irregularities in the bank’s loan disbursement along with a huge amount of default loans in 2017.
