Rangpur declared free of piranha fish

A meeting was held at the terminal of Rangpur City Corporation on Monday afternoon to declare Rangpur district free of piranha fish on the occasion of Mujibvarsha and the golden jubilee of great victory. District Fisheries Officer Barun Chandra Biswas presided over the function while Deputy Commissioner Md. Asib Ahsan was present as the chief guest. Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Nur Nahar Begum was the special guest.
The presidents and fishmongers of the Warehousing Association from eight upazilas under Rangpur district were present at the time. DC Md. Asib Ahsan said that the fisheries sector under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister has achieved enviable success in the world and in its continuation we want to bring back the lost native species of fish and increase fish production. So we think the action taken by the Rangpur District Fisheries Department on the occasion of Mujib Year was a timely decision. He thanked the fisheries officers of eight upazilas including the district fisheries department for implementing this program.
He further said that implementation of fisheries law would be intensified and necessary steps would be taken to prevent all types of fish, not just piranha fish, from entering Rangpur district. In this context, the warehouse keepers promised that they would never allow fish to enter the warehouses banned by the government and would not trade in these fish. The warehouse keepers pointed out some infrastructural problems of the terminal fish warehouse which the Deputy Commissioner assured that he would recommend the matter to the city corporation authorities for implementation At the end of the discussion, he declared Rangpur district free of piranha fish on the occasion of Mujibvarsha and the triumph of great victory.
