Ranga Bahini chief killed in ‘gunfight’

A ringleader of forest robbers was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between his cohorts and police in Pakhimara area in Shyamnagar upazila early Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as Ashraf Hossain Ranga, leader of ‘Ranga Bahini’ of the area and son of Fazer Ali of Kurikaunia village in Ashasuni upazila of the district.
Sagir Mia, Officer-in-Charge of Shyamnagar Police Station said, police arrested ringleader Ashraf Hossain Ranga on Saturday.
Later, police conducted a drive along with Ranga to recover arms in the area after Saturday midnight, he said.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, his cohorts fired gunshots in a bid to snatch Ranga, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate which triggered a gunfight.
Ranga was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet wounds.
He was rushed to Shyamnagar health complex where doctors declared him dead, the OC added.
Two policemen were also injured during the exchange of fire. Later, police recovered a gun and four bombs from the spot. Police said, Ranga was wanted in 20 cases.
