BSS, Rajshahi :

Local farmers said the frequent rainfall has filled up nearby ponds, canals and other wetlands, contributing lots to the whole process of jute retting.
Meanwhile, the newly harvested jute has already started appearing in the local markets in limited scale.
DAE had set a target for cultivating jute on 46,452 hectares of land whereas the farmers have finally brought 48,147 hectares under the cash crop farming. Additional Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Abdul Hannan said farmers have brought more land under jute cultivation this year because of getting fair prices during last couple of years.
Farmers boosted jute farming in the region as they got quality seeds and easy term bank loans for agri-inputs such as fertilizer, pesticides, he added.
Jaidur Rahman, a jute grower of Karnahar village under Paba Upazila, said the good days of jute have started returning back. Last year, they got around Taka 2000 by selling per mound of jute.
He said the price could have been more if there were no syndicate of middlemen and traders. He sought government intervention of controlling the syndicate to facilitate the farmers for getting fair price.
Deb Dulal Dhali, Deputy Director of DAE, said jute farming has started getting its brighter dimension in the region through increasing production and export, ensuring adequate supply of quality seed, disbursement of more incentives and adopting other effective measures. The farmers have started using seeder machines for saving huge seed and reducing farming costs and modern ribbon-retting method to get quality fibre and more profit, he also said.
He added that necessary measures are being taken for helping the farmers to increase jute cultivation and all field level officials and others concerned were instructed to attain the cherished goal.
Commissioner of Rajshahi division Noor-Ur-Rahman told BSS that increased farming of jute could revive the past glory of the golden fiber with ushering a new era in the economy.
