Rajpunnyah Festival begins in Bandarban

Rajpunnyah, the biggest colourful traditional festival of the Bomang tribe, began in the district on Thursday.
On this occasion, the 37th King of Bomang Circle Engineer U Chaw Prue, wearing traditional dress, joined the main programme centre along with the people belonging to Bomang Circle on Thursday afternoon.
People from different communities paid their tributes to the king standing both sides of the road.
At that time, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader MP, Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance Ministry Dr M Abdur Razzak, State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Bir Bahadur MP, Chittagong Army Region GOC Major General Jahangir Kabir, Bandarban Zila Parishad Chairman Koshaihla, Army Region Commander Brigadier General Jubair Salehin, Deputy Commissioner Delip Kumar Banik, Superintendent of Police Sanjit Kumar Roy, were also present.
Besides, people of indigenous communities, including Chakma, Marma and Tripura, in three hill districts under the Chittagong Hill Tracts flocked to the compound of the king’s residence to enjoy the festival.
Rajpunnyah is an annual revenue collection programme where the Bomang Circle Chief collects taxes from headmen and karbaris (traders).
On the opening day of the festival, the headmen of 109 mouzas and over 1,000 karbaris (traders) will express their loyalty to the Bomangree, who receives annul jhum tax and traditional gifts from them.
A traditional fair also began at the historical Rajar Math in the town during the three-day Rajpunnyah.
