The Supreme Court has resolved contempt charges against Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman and Joint Editor Mizanur Rahman Khan after they apologised.
The two issued unconditional apologies before the eight-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain on Monday.
The same bench had earlier instructed both the editors to appear before it on Monday over an article on the chief justice’s appointment earlier published in the daily .
Dr Kamal Hossain and Barrister M Amir Ul Islam represented the editors in the court while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state.
“The court has resolved the matter after accepting their unconditional apologies,” Alam told bdnews24.com.
The High Court earlier had found Khan guilty of gross contempt for two of his articles published by the daily and censured the newspaper.
Prothom Alo had ran a report on Dec 15, the title of which read after rough translation, ‘Choosing the chief justice’.
It raised questions about the process to be followed in the appointment of the Chief Justice after the present incumbent retires. The report said the 12th amendment to the Constitution bars accepting the prime minister’s recommendations. But that was not being followed, it claimed.
“The present chief justice holding the post for three consecutive years is a rare instance,” it said.
After senior lawyer Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud brought the issue to the Appellate Division’s attention, it asked him to submit a plea.
Later, Barrister Sirajum Munir brought contempt of court charges against Matiur Rahman and Mizanur Rahman Khan in a petition and the Appellate Division summoned them, said the attorney general.
