Professional skills of seafarers stressed

Shipping Minister Sahjahan Khan today urged the seafarers of National Maritime Institute (NMI) to work with professional efficiency so foreign shipping companies recruit more Bangladeshis in their vessels.
The minister was addressing as chief guest the passing out parade of 17th batch Pre Sea Ratings of NMI and 6th batch Madripur branch of NMI held at NMI parade field of Saltgola in the city yesterday morning.
He said the Bangladeshis are more efficient and hard working, so the opportunities for them and demand of their jobs at international maritime markets are very high. The minister said that realising the importance of shipping sector Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took initiatives to set up a few maritime institutes in the country.
He said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would make all efforts to build six more branches of modern NMI in the country.
The shipping minister asked the Pre Sea Ratings to be attentive to their responsibilities while on duty and attain professional excellence through continuous learning and gathering experiences.
He said Bangamatha Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Maritime Museum will be built on the old Seaman’s Hostel ground in Chittagong very soon.
NMI sources said a total of 60 NMI Ratings from 17th batch Chittagong and 6th batch Madripur branch earned commission today.
Principal of NMI Chittagong Captain Foisal Azim presided over the function while M A Latif, MP, senior officials from port, shipping sectors, among others, addressed the function.
Officials said over 2205 cadets have received training from NMI since 1994 and they are working in different ships at home and abroad.
