The required books for 2021 academic year have not been printed in due time. As a result the students of primary and secondary schools, ebtedai and dakhil madrasas and technical institutes are not getting full set of books on the first day of the year. They will get it in 12 days.
The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) Chairman Prof Narayan Chandra Saha said, due to some difficulties including Covid-19 pandemic the printing owners have not been able to supply books in time. He said, almost two third of books have been printed. Some of them reached the schools, some are one the way and will reach in short time.
As in the previous years, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the textbook distribution on December 31.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Dipu Moni on Tuesday said, because of the pandemic, the government will not hold the Textbook Festival on January 1 when textbooks are handed over to primary and secondary students free of cost every year.
Dipu Moni urged the educational institutions to refrain from realising unnecessary fees from their students. “We will take stern action if anyone violates the ministry order,” she said. This time, new textbooks will be distributed among the secondary students in their schools in 12 days. They have to show up in the schools to collect those.
The book distribution system will be a bit different for primary students.
State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Zakir Hossen said the guardians of primary students should go to schools to collect the new textbooks for their children.
“We will not hand over the new textbooks to the primary students, keeping in mind the Covid situation.”
He said a primary school with less than 200 students must distribute the textbooks in a day, while one with more than 200 students will get three days to do it.
The NCTB chairman said 34.36 crore textbooks will be distributed among 4.16 crore students across the country.
Bangladesh has continued to set up examples in the world by way of distribution of free textbooks among large number of students on the first day of January. The annual event began in 2009/10 when the government decided to tackle a growing textbook crisis in Bangladesh’s schools and colleges.
