In light of the National Education Policy-2010, the government has decided to expand the level of the primary education up to Class VIII from V.
“We have decided to extend to expand the level of primary education up to Class VIII from Class V by 2018, and now a process is underway to implement it,” said Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid after a meeting on “Implementing the Education Policy” held in the conference room of the Education Ministry on Wednesday.
Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, Dr Khaliquzzaman and high officials concerned of the ministry, among others, were present on the occasion the meeting.
At the meeting, an additional secretary of the ministry read out a letter written by eminent educationist Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, which said that Class V terminal examination creates pressure on students and coaching business is growing up centring the examinations.
Zafar Iqbal sent the letter to the education ministry earlier, as he could not attend the meeting.
Nurul Islam Nahid said that the summary of the decision would be sent to the Prime Minister soon.
“From now, all the decisions regarding class VI, VII and VIII will be the matter of Primary and Mass Education Ministry,” he said.
The Education Minister termed the decision ‘a major decision’ for the country’s education system.
Replying to a query whether the students will sit for the both Primary School Certificate (PSC) and Junior School Certificate (JSC) examinations, Nahid said, “There has been no decision yet in this regard and the Primary and Mass Education Ministry will take the decision afterward.”
Meanwhile, Mostafizur Rahman said, “There are some formalities to implement this important decision. We will implement it soon and all the educational activities up to Class VIII will be under his ministry once it is implemented.”
In 2009, the National Education Policy Formulation Committee submitted the National Education Policy to the government with the recommendations of expanding the primary education level up to Class VIII and secondary level up to Class XII.
