In the wake of escalating tensions centering Ukraine, the Pentagon on Wednesday announced that US President Joe Biden has formally approved the deployment of 3,000 troops to Poland, Germany and Romania in a move to bolster NATO countries in Eastern Europe. On the other hand, Kremlin the same day said that ‘US de facto is continuing to pump up tension in Europe, and Russia has an obvious reason to be worried.’
The military deployments to Eastern Europe are nothing but a show of support to NATO allies feeling threatened by Russia’s military moves near Ukraine. With this latest move it becomes clear that US is getting preparation to counter Russian invasion on Ukraine. Moscow has not yet shown any sign of de-escalating tensions despite rounds of diplomatic talks by US and NATO.
Just a day before, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin accused the US of trying to draw his country into Ukraine war in an intension to use a confrontation as a pretext to impose more sanctions on Russia. Media report also said Mr. Putin further claimed US was ignoring Russia’s concerns about expansion of Western military alliance NATO, where Ukraine is reportedly interested to join. It is not the question of the US President or Russia’s President to decide whether Ukraine will join NATO. Ukraine has to be accepted as sovereign country.
Not only that, Russia has also moved about 100,000 troops to Ukraine’s border in recent weeks. Why these military activities have done? The answer is simple. It is done only to keep constant pressure on Kiev. Ukraine may be an old part of now defunct Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) but now it is a sovereign state.
So, it may have its own desire to join the NATO alliance. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned on Tuesday that a Russian invasion would “not be a war between Ukraine and Russia – this would be a war in Europe, a full-scale one”. It is bound to be the reality. Any war over Ukraine will bring disaster for Russia also.
