Election Commission has claimed that the Gazipur City Corporation election was held in a free, fair and credible manner.
Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said it while addressing a post-polls press conference at the Commission office in Dhaka yesterday evening.”Free and fair election was held in a festive mode although voting in nine centres out of total 425 was suspended based on allegation of irregularities,” he said adding that except the nine centres, no irregularities took place in the election.
Prior to the Gazipur election, the Election Commission instructed all concerned people to stop the voting soon after allegation of irregularities were found, the EC Secretary said.
“And thus, we did not tolerate irregularities. Presiding officers in line with the directives of the Election Commission stopped voting at the nine centres,” he said.
Some videos over irregularities in the election were published in different social media.
Responding to a query in this regard, the EC Secretary rejected the accusation.
“Internal feud among the councillor candidates caused the irregularities that forced us to stop voting in nine centres,” Helal said.
