UNB, Dhaka :
Speakers at seminar here on Thursday urged the government to introduce a specific policy to accommodate the environment friendly electric vehicles (EV) in the country’s transportation system.
“This has been a very good thing that about a million electricity vehicles, known as Easy Bike, have been plying the streets though they aren’t authorised by the authorities concerned,” Dr. Ijaz Hossain, a professor of the Department of Chemical Engineering of Buet, told the seminar held at the Daily Star Centre in the city.
He said these vehicles are not maintained specific engineering and technical
standard, but have become a reality in rural transportation.
“So, time has come to set a standard and bring those under a legal framework as they’re environment-friendly vehicles and play a role in transportation,” he said.
Asia Foundation, an international NGO, in collaboration with Rahimafrooz, organised the seminar titled: ‘Promoting Safety Standard and Energy Efficiency of Mass Transport EV to Meet SDG Goals’.
Advocate Mahboob Murshed, adviser to the Asia Foundation, made a presentation on the issue while former chairman of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Kazi Emdadul Haque, deputy director of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) Sajjadul Bari and Rahimafrooz’s head of energy access Kazi Faruque Ahmed also spoke on the occasion.
The speakers said the government should set specific standard for the EVs as the developed and developing countries in Europe and Asia have already announced the plan to replace motor vehicles with electric vehicles to promote environment-friendly transport system.
Mahboob Murshed said about one million Easy-Bikes are currently transporting 2.5 crore passengers in both townships and rural areas every day.
