Henceforth, police would hold ‘one-to-one’ talk with each of the dwellers of the city with a view to collecting information from them, Asaduzzaman Miah, Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said.
He said each police station’s bit-officer (area-wise) would knock each door of the landlords, tenants and businessmen of the capital to listen to their problems and sufferings so that they can be able to settle it down to present a crimeless city.
The DMP Chief was addressing bit-policing meeting in the capital’s Gausia Market area on Monday organised by New Market Police Station.
“Police mean people, people mean police, and police should ensure security of people by working for them as a friend and it should not be acceptable that any citizen have been harassed by police,” he said.
Asaduzzaman Miah said: “We want to arrest the criminals and if we would not be able to get information of city people, then how we would perform our duty.”
We would provide training to ten police officials of all the 49-police stations of the capital so that they would be able to preserve the tenants’ database safely, which would be kept in secret and it would not be shared with anyone including government, non-government officials and journalists, he continued.
The DMP boss also said: “I have asked police officials not to force anyone, if any city inhabitant does not want to share totally the close information about them.”
Like, if anyone does not want to share details of marital status or cell number, not to force them to provide it, he said.
However, the person should need to provide present and permanent addresses, including photocopy of national ID-card.
City people would provide other information when they find that it is not harmful to give information to police, added the DMP Chief.
Sheikh Maruf Hasan, DMP’s Additional commissioner, said: “We would not be able to arrest criminals if landlords would not be able to provide any information about tenants; so we are collecting it.”
Krishna Pada Roy, Joint Commissioner, Maruf Hossain Sarder, Deputy Commissioner, Abdul Baten, Deputy Commissioner and DMP’s New Market police station OC Yeasin Arafat were also present at the meeting, among others.
