Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that the police showed extreme patience during the Sunday’s Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) program in front of the press club.
He made the remarks on the occasion of recognition ceremony in “Police Memorial Day-2021” at the Police Staff College in Dhaka’s Mirpur on Monday.
The Minister said “Yesterday (Sunday) we saw how a policeman was found alone in front of the press club and how he was beaten indiscriminately. Everyone witnessed it. Yet police had dealt with the situation with extreme patience.
Police are fulfilling their responsibilities. For this reason, we have been able to meet the demand for a secure Bangladesh,” he added.
Replying to a question, Asaduzzaman said police personnel never enter the press club. The way the brickbats were being thrown that day, a couple of police may have entered at that time.
According to the rule of the press club, the police do not enter there. But the way brickbats and fights were created; there should have been no fights, he added.
Regarding tear gas, he said police lobbed tear gas canisters when the violence escalated. It’s just a strategy to disperse unruly mob.
The Minister also said that “The authorities need to be more vigilant to prevent outsider’s entry to protect the security of the Jatiya Press Club. The authorities have to take responsibility in this regard. By doing this it is possible to avoid any kind of chaotic situation. The press club is yours; you have to ensure its safety.”
In the program, it was informed that 208 members of the police force had died including covid-19 at different times in 2020. While on duty, they mourned the death of the deceased and handed over the honor to the family of the deceased.
The ceremony was chaired by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed.
