A housewife in Dinajpur claims police have refused to register a case against her policeman husband, who allegedly tortures her for dowry.
The injured 25-year old housewife, Ayesha Siddiqua, is currently undergoing treatment at the Dinajpur General Hospital. Speaking to bdnews24.com, she said her husband, police Constable Abul Bashar Pramanik, who works in Dinajpur used to beat her often for dowry.
Ayesha claimed her husband is a drug addict and involved with various ‘anti-social’ activities. “He beats me up and verbally abuses me whenever I protest against these works,” she said.
Last year, her husband had beaten her unconscious and threatened to publish her nude photos on the internet if she could not manage the dowry amount.
She said she had moved then Superintendent of Police who let go Abul Bashar after “mild warnings”.
His tortures did not end even then, said the housewife.
Ayesha claimed on Tuesday evening her husband started beating her with his belt and at one stage, threw a wooden chair at her. Her relatives had admitted her to hospital the same night.
The victim’s elder brother Abu Hiya alleged police had refused to accept a case over the incident.
Police had sent Abul Bashar on a seven-day leave from Mar 6 to ‘protect’ him, claimed Hiya.
Kotwali police station OC Altaf Hossain rejected Hiya’s claim. “We have suggested them to properly write the allegations,” he said. He, however, admitted that Bashar had been granted leave.
The OC said Bashar had taken leave ‘for the treatment’ of his ‘ailing’ wife. Abul Bashar, the Constable in question, could not be reached for comments.
