People urged to unite for restoring rule of law: Speakers

Speakers in a civil society’s discussion in the city on Tuesday said that people have a right to know what were the corruptions of former Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha.
Civil society’s representatives said, “Addressing a Chief Justice in disparage words’ is directly against the constitution. But it has been done in his case. Judge is also a man, so he can do corruption, but nobody
 knows what was SK Sinha’s corruption.”
They urged all conscious people to unite and to work for restoring rule of law and freedom of judiciary in the country.
Eminent lawyer, Constitution expert Dr Kamal Hossain said, freedom of judiciary is essential for establishing justice and people’s right.
He said, the 16th amendment of Constitution was very pathetic for us but we did not lose everything yet.
Dr. Kamal Hossain said it while speaking at the Roundtable on the Rule of Law: Perspective of Bangladesh, organized by Susasoner Janya Nagorik (SUJAN), a civil society body, in the VIP Lounge of the National Press Club on Tuesday.
Executive Member of SUJAN Justice Abdul Matin presented the key-note paper on the topic.
Columnist Syed Abul Maksud said, “I generally understand that the rule of law is the system where mass people live in peace and culprits always move in fear, but unfortunately rule of law its totally absent here.”
Environment Specialist Advocate Syeda Rizwana Hasan of BELA said, the caretaker government was the result of mass people movement, So, how can a man reject it ?
Local government expert Dr Tofail Ahmed questioned the facilities given to the VIPs ? They can not have separate arrangement, he said. The program was moderated by Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar , General Secretary of SUJAN. Justice Kazi Emdadul Haque presided in the function.
Barrister Amirul Islam, Professor Asif Nazrul, Engineer Mubashir Hasan, Barrister Rumin Farhan, among others, spoke in the function.
