BSS, Chittagong :
Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) has embarked on a TK
1100 crore mega project for development of electric supply management system in Chittagong region.
The PDB, Chittagong has already started the work titled “Chittagong Zone Power Distribution System Development Project” with a view to ensuring uninterrupted power supply through modernization of three decades old and conked out power distribution system in Chittagong city.
The main feature of the project is it will add Sandwip island with the national grid through 80 kilometers sub-marine cables under the Bay of Bengal for the first time as PDB now supplies limited power in some parts of Sanwip through a generator and solar panels by a private company.
Deputy Project Director Engineer Prabir Kumar Sen said the project aims at modernizing power distribution system in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and three hill districts keeping in view the demand for electricity by 2025.
The project includes installation of 1100 kilometers new transmission lines with 1283-megawatt capacity, renovation of 1100 kilometers of old lines, setting up of 14 new sub-stations, increasing capacity of eight old sub-stations, he added.
“Under the ongoing project, modern electrical wires are being used instead of existing undersized ones, which will help to conduct power supply with a 560-megawatt capacity”, he said adding that it would lessen the risk of disordering transmission lines due to excessive pressure of power.
PDB sources said the project was approved in Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting on September 9, 2014.
PDB now supplies around 950 Megawatts (MW) electricity against per day demand of 1000 MW in Chittagong and the demand may increase to 4000 MW by 2021, sources said.
The government has taken up the mega project as part of its preparation to cope with the growing demand for electricity, the sources added.
