Papaya cultivation gains popularity among farmers in Kasiani UZ

Shahi and red lady papaya cultivation is gaining popularity among the farmers of Kasiani upazila in Gopalganj as it has proved a profitable vegetable crop in this region recently.
Shahi and red lady papaya invented by Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) a high yielding variety of vegetable crop besides a high protein able fruits in our country. It second place after mango of vitamin-A.
Rafiqul Hasan Suman (35) of village Fukra under Tarail Block of Fukra Union in Kasiani Upazila told The New Nation I have cultivated papaya red lady on 3 acres of land (300 decimal) where spending taka 90,000 & I accept taka about 2,50,000 as a profit from it produce One stage he also said, during a short time farmer can more profit from this vegetable crop & around only 75 days a farmer can start harvest from it planting.
At least 300 farmers family in Kasiani Upazila in the district farming this vegetable fruit (crop). But now farmers facing lack of cold storage facilities and papaya processing plants besides farmers are being deprived of fair price, Rafiqul said.
Miraz Sheikh (45), another farmer of village Puna under Kasiani Upazila in the district told The New Nation he cultivated papaya origin shahi on 6 acres of land but he is now unable to supply fertilizer to his field & he cannot take care properly on his field due to shortage of money. Even though he get a medium benefit about taka 4 lac from his papaya produce. Miraz further said, the cultivators in this region are facing some problem like financial constraint and absence of marketing facilities. If the papaya growers get easy & short term loan from bank or any economic sector they will more cultivate on the crop and earned huge money from it produce every year and may be our country export papaya & earn huge foreign currency, one stage he added.
Some growers in this region said they have been cultivating the crop (papaya) from last few years but they did not getting fair prices of their produce. If they got expected price they increased on papaya cultivation, they added.
Rashamay Mondol, Upazila Agriculture Officer (UAO), Kasiani told The New Nation papaya cultivation is bright probability for farmers in this region because soil and weather condition is favourable for farming this cultivation and farmers get a good profit from it produce during a short time. Where need a small investment but return is big, he added.
According to Kasiani Agriculture Official sources said, a total of 25 hectares of land have been brought under papaya farming under Kasiani Upazila. Where production target at 625 metric tonnes (MT) which market price above taka 62 lacs, UAO said.
