A roundtable on ‘Sustainable rights to Land’ organized jointly by non-government organisations Manusher Jonno Foundation, Uttaran and CARE was held in the seminar room of The Daily Star building in the city. Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif was present at the roundtable as the chief guest. While speaking the minister said the government will take steps to ensure the rights of marginal people on khas land.”Though, according to the existing law, the landless people should have priority on khas land (public land), it is not practiced in reality. Land grabbers and rich people become the owners of these lands with the help of concerned persons and deprive the marginal people,” he said. Chaired by Manusher Jonno Foundation Executive Director Shahin Anam, the function was addressed by, Director General of Directorate of Land Records and Survey M Abdul Mannan, Economist Professor Abul Barkat and National Project Director of Access to Land and Property Rights of All Citizen of Bangladesh Shamsul Alam, among others. The minister said concerted efforts needed to ensure the rights of marginal people.
