Ctg Port: Operation of NCT hangs in balance

Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority Rear Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed said full-swing operation of the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) yet to decided lack of procurement of operating equipments from abroad. He said 9-members procurement committee of the Ports & Shipping Ministry did not submit the reports of procurement of container handling equipments as yet, as a result the immediate operation of the terminal is uncertain.
 CPA chairman disclosed it while addressing a press conference at Port Training Institute hall as arranged in observance of 128th founding anniversary of CP on Saturday morning. In the written statement, port chairman said there are five berths in the NCT and lack of proper handling equipments, only geared vessels are being handled in this terminal only. He further said the construction of NCT ended some years ago but lack of foreign operators, purchase of equipments either private operator or port’s own fund , complications remained pending since long.
Lastly concerned ministry constituted 9-members procurement committee to procure the handling equipments from abroad but the committee not yet submitted reports to the ministry, the press meet was told. Chairman also emphasized the need for capital dredging of port channel as the foreign contractor stopped the dredging following the cancellation of their work order. Now a case is now under trial in between CPA and Dredging company before Chittagong court. . CPA disclosed increase of GDP in handling containers by 15% .
 The press meet was told that to increase the capacity of CP, three terminals namely Laldia Terminal, Bay Terminal and Karnaphuli Terminal will be constructed simultaneously by 2019 . Beside, a two-kilometer long Payera Terminal will be completed by 2018. CPA terminal Manager Enamul Karim presented a report of present ongoing activities of the port, sources said.
