Expressing satisfaction over sending former Officer-in-Charge of Sonagazi Police Station Moazzem Hossain to jail, the family members of Nusrat Jahan, who was burnt to death, want capital punishment to the arrested OC.
Nusrat’s father AKM Musa said, “I along with my family members are grateful to the police and judges as they managed everything to send the OC to jail.”
“The former OC assaulted my daughter and sheltered those who killed her (Nusrat). He (Moazzem) is also one of the culprits of my daughter’s killing. We demand for capital punishment to OC Moazzem,” Musa said.
“My daughter’s soul will feel good when Moazzem and others involved with the brutal murder get death penalty and its execution,” he said.
Nusrat’s elder brother, Mahmud Hassan Noman, said, “We lost Nusrat amid a tragic incident. Please ensure capital punishment to all involved with the killing. Moazzem is one of the culprits. We want maximum punishment to him.” “Many victims have the bitter experiences during interrogation in the Police `tations in the country. Nusrat also was the victim like them. Now the people of the county want justice for Nusrat. We also wish fast, free and fair trial,” he said. A Dhaka Court on Monday sent former OC of Sonagazi Police Station Moazzem Hossain to jail, rejecting his bail petition in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.
Earlier, police arrested Moazzem Hossain from the High Court area on Sunday in a case filed over circulating a video on social media on Feni Madrasa girl Nusrat Jahan.
On May 27, a Dhaka Court issued an arrest warrant against Moazzem Hossain in the case. But he could not be traced after the issuance of the warrant.
Allegations brought against Moazzem after Nusrat Jahan’s murder was found to be authentic by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
Supreme Court lawyer Syedul Haque Sumon filed the case against Moazzem Hossain under the Digital Security Act on May 15. The former OC was accused of illegally interrogating Nusrat and recording the episode on his phone. The video was later circulated on the social media.
Moazzem summoned Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa’s Principal Siraj Ud Doula and Nusrat to the police station after the latter accused her teacher of sexually harassing her. The OC interrogated Nusrat in absence of her lawyer or any other women. She was crying but the OC paid no heed and kept questioning her using inappropriate language.
Nusrat’s mother had filed a case with Sonagazi police over her daughter’s sexual harassment. On April 6, the girl was set on fire at an exam centre in Sonagazi Upazila by people loyal to Siraj Ud Doula.
She lost her battle for life on April 10, five days after she was set on fire — an incident that sparked outrage all over the country. Protest rallies and human chains demanding justice were held across the country.
