Staff Reporter :
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque on Thursday said there was severe negligence of the owners behind the fire and casualties at gas lighter factory in Ashulia on Tuesday.
“Necessary actions against the owners should be taken immediately. If it is needed, there should be a criminal case filed against the owners because the owners have committed a serious crime,” the NHRC Chairman said.
He came up with the remarks after visiting the victims with burn injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 1pm on Thursday.
Kazi Reazul Hoque said, every victim with burn injuries is in a very severe state whether they are undergoing treatment in ICU or general wards. Nobody is out of danger yet. Everybody needs intensive care.
He also said, the factory owners, government organisations, fire service department, the Labour Ministry could not deny the responsibilities of the incident.
“Our observation is that there were no safety measures taken in the gas lighter factory. Such as specific dresses, masks and so on,” he said.
There were also child workers engaged in this hazardous job. The labour worked there a minimum of 14 hours a day and got Tk 2,200 as salary which is in violation of Labour Act as well.
He said, one of the NHRC teams has already gone there to Ashulia. After the visit, they will provide a complete report regarding the incident.
The license of the owners should be cancelled immediately and actions should be taken against them, he added.
