Two cops held on charge of toll collection in Kurigram

Kurigram Sadar thana police arrested three persons including two police constables on Thursday on the charge of collecting toll from a motor cycle rider on Thursday. The arrested are constable of Kurigram DB police Atikuzzaman, constable of Kurigram court Mamunur Rashid and his associate Monu Miah.Local sources said Maydul Islam a motor cycle rider went to a hostel at Kurigram college para to meet with his younger brother Liton in the evening on Wednesday. When he was returning home police constables demanded Tk one lakh as toll. Maydul’s brother paid Tk. 10 thousand through Bikash according to their number and informed the matter to Kurigram Sadar thana police. Maidul hailed from Porarchar village under Roumari upazila in the district. Police watch the Bikas shop at Kurigram municipality market in plain cloth at night on the day and when two police constables and their associate Monu Miah came to the Bikas shop to withdraw the money for toll were arrested by Sadar thana police. Another constable Shah Alam who also serving in Kurigram court managed to escape. Polices are trying to arrest him.
Cops-journos discussion held in Savar

Dhaka district police arranged a discussion with journalists of Savar, Ashulia and Dhamrai thana on how to make police service standard” at Savar police station on Saturday evening. Police Super of Dhaka district Habibur Rahman,BPM, PPM was present at the seminar as a Chief Guest. The seminar was presided over by Javed Mostofa, President of Savar press Club. Among others ASP Raseel Sheikh, Sheikh Badrul Alom OC of Ashulia police station, Sohidulah Munshi President of Ashulia Press Club and different electronics and print media journalist were present in the seminar. Habibur Rahman, Police Super of Dhaka district said, “We want to increase our service standard for this case we think your opinion would be very helpful for us. If you have any opinion about it please help us by giving that information.” The discussion seminar continued about two hour and journalists gave their opinion.
May Day observed in Sylhet

Historic May Day was observed in Sylhet on Thursday (May 1) as elsewhere in the country. To mark the day, labour directorate and Sylhet district administration jointly arranged different programmes in the city, including procession, rally and discussion meeting. A discussion meeting was held at the premises of directorate of labour’s office, Sylhet at central Shihidminar in the city. Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Md. Shohidul Islam was present in the discussion meeting as chief guest. Astt. Police Super Nahimul Hasan, ADC Nurul Haqu, Monirul Islam, Sadar UNO Khondkar Monuar Murshed, NDC Mamunur Rahamn, Shromik Lige leader Jafor Ahmed Chowdhury, Shromik Dal Mashuk Uddin Ahmed were present as special guests. Joint Director of Sylhet labour directorate, M K Alam presided over the function. Deputy Chief Inspector of the same office, Md Mizanur Rahman delivered the welcome speech. Speakers in the meeting expressed solidarity with the movement for establishing the socio-economic rights of the working class. Earlier, in the morning, a colourful procession was brought out from the KDA New Market area that paraded the city’s main streets and concluded at the labour office.
Book Fair begins in Rangpur

A 10-day Divisional Book Fair- 2014 has begun at Public Library premises in Rangpur city today afternoon. Minister for Cultural Affairs Asaduzzaman Noor, MP formally inaugurated the fair as the chief guest. Presided over by Divisional Commissioner Muhammad Dilwar Bakht Lawmaker Advocate Safura Khatun Rumi, Additional Divisional Commissioner (general) Narayan Chandra Barma and Deputy Commissioner Farid Ahammad attended the ceremony as special guests. A total of 65 stalls have been set up in the fair. Civil society members, students, teachers, politicians and a large number of local people also attended the function.The fair will remain open for all from 3 pm to 9 pm daily on the working days (Sunday to Thursday) and from 10 am to 9 pm on holidays (Friday and Saturday) from May 2 to May 11.
