A workshop on checking rough map of land zoning was arranged by the ministry of land with the association of Chapainawabganj sadar upazila Administration at the auditorium of the upazila Parishad on Tuesday.It was held with the sadar UNO Mirza Shakila Dil Hasin in the chair it was addressed by deputy commissioner of Chapainawabganj Md. Jahidul Islam as chief guest, mayor of Chapainawabganj municipality Maolana Abdul Matin as special guest, the project officials Abdus Sattar and Mahbubur Rahman.The speakers said cultivable land is being reduced and the environment is losing its balance causing a serious threat to the people of the country as 220 hectares of cultivable land is being occupied everyday for unplanned construction of residential houses, mills and factories and roads. Government officials, institutional heads, civil society members, NGO representatives and media workers took part in the workshop. With a view to stopping misuse of land government has taken up land zoning project at its own funding to bring all sectors under their respective umbrellas, they informed. They further informed that the first phase of the project has been completed and the second phase is running. Under this project a digital map would be made by marking all union level lands, they said again.

The 14th death anniversary of former vice president of Khulna Press Club and staff Reporter of local daily Purbanchal, Harunur Rashid Khokon was observed in Khulna recently .Marking Khokon’s 14th death anniversary, journalists yesterday arranged doa mahfil, discussion meeting at VIP lounge of Khulna Press Club and also placed floral wreaths at the memorial of Khokon on the press club premises. Khulna Union Of Journalists (KUJ) and family members of Khokon also arranged different programmes marking the day. Journalist Harunur Rashid Khokon was killed by the miscreants at Mujgunni Nesaria Madrasa area at Khalishpur police station in Khulna city on March13, 2002 while going towards his office at around 7pm. Miscreants shot him to death while he was riding a motorcycle.
Top terror arrested with arms, ammo in Jhenaidah

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Jhenaidah arrested a most wanted outfit activist with a Chinese Sub Machine Gun, a shooter gun and 108 rounds of bullets from a village in Sailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah in the early hours of Tuesday. The arrestee was identified as Badsha Laskar, 48, and son of Chad Ali Laskar of Bashpur village under the upazila. Company commander of RAB-6 Major Suruj Mia said Badsha, an activist of the out fit Gana Mukti Fouz was staying in his house of the area. The RAB personell being informed conducted a drive at the house and arrested him with the arms and ammunitions.
Man jailed for throwing acid on girl in Sylhet

A Sylhet court yesterday convicted a man for 7 years imprisonment with Tk 40,000 fine for throwing acid on a girl on December 8, 2000. The convict was identified as Ayes ALi, 35 son of Mofij Ali, a resident of Mollikpur village in Fenchugonj thana. The court also sentenced him six more months in jail if he failed to pay fine. According to prosecution story, the convict threw acid on Shipa Begum, daughter of Gadu Miha at Mollikpur village on December 8, 2000 at night over the issue of love affair, leaving her critically injured. A case was filed with Fenchugonj thana in this connection next day of the incident. After examining the records and witnesses, Sylhet District Judge’s Court’ Bimol Chandro Sikder handed down the verdict.
