Four children drowned on Eid day

Four children drowned in different ponds in the districts of Khulna and Thakurgaon on Wednesday, the day of Eid. The children, aged between four and 10 years, included two siblings. In Thakurgaon, the two siblings — Shimu, 9 and Jannatun, 4, daughters of Shahabul Alam — allegedly slipped into a pond near their house in Medinisagar village while playing on Wednesday afternoon. Md Amirul Islam, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Haripur Police Station, said the kids were playing near the water body adjacent to their house in Haripur upazila’s Medinisagar village. “When they did not return home after a long time, their family members started searching for them. Later, locals found their bodies floating in the pond,” he said. A few hours later, two children drowned in a pond in Khulna. The duo had gone to take bath in the waterbody in their village Araji Dumuria in Dumuria upazila.

35 shops gutted in fire day after Eid

A devastating fire broke out at Tahabazar of Chapainawabganj’s Puratanbazar area on Thursday afternoon. At least 35 shops were burnt in the blaze. However, no casualties were reported. According to police, locals noticed smoke coming out of the shops and informed the fire service at around 4:15 pm. Five units of the fire service brought the fire under control after 3 hours of effort. Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station OC Mozaffar Hossain said no deaths were reported as the shops were closed due to Eid holidays but the fire burnt 35 shops. The amount of damage was not immediately known, he said. Rajshahi Fire Service Deputy Director Abdur Rashid said on information, the Chapainawabganj Fire Service team started working to control the fire. Later four units from Shibganj, Nachol, Gomstapur and Godagari joined them and brought the fire under control after 3 hours of joint effort.

Two held with Yaba tablets in Rangpur

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-13) arrested two presumed drug traders with contraband Yaba tablets from Thikadarpara Nurpur area in the metropolis on Friday. The arrested are: Md Nurul Haque Milon, 35, and Most Meem, 23, of Rangpur metropolitan area.
 “On a tip-off, an operational team of the RAB-13 conducted a raid and arrested the drug traders from the area this morning,” said a press release issued by Assistant Director (Media) of RAB-13 Flight Lieutenant Mahmud Bashir Ahmed here.
During the raid, the elite force seized 223 pieces of smuggled Yaba tablets, two mobile phone sets and Taka 2,450 in cash from the arrested person’s possession.
During interrogation, the arrested admitted that they had been involved in drug trading for a long time.
 “After filing a case in this connection against the arrested persons, the elite force handed them over to Kotwali Police Station of Rangpur Metropolitan Police this afternoon,” the release added.

Five held for gambling in C’nawabganj

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested five persons allegedly for gambling from Dhaka Bus Stand area in the town Tuesday night. RAB said, acting on a tip-off, an operation team of RAB-5 conducted a raid in the sweepers’ room of Dhaka Bus Stand at 11pm and held them red handed. RAB also seized four sets of playing cards and Taka 13,329 from them. Later, the arrested persons were handed over to the police of sadar thana with a case.

Six killed in Bagerhat road accident

Six people died and another was injured as a truck and a battery-run three-wheeler collided head-on in front of Bailtoli Primary School on Dhaka-Khulna Highway in Fakirhat upazila here this morning. Khairul Anam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Fakirhat Police Station, said the accident took place around 7.45 am when a truck coming from the opposite direction hit the Fakirhat bound easybike carrying passengers from Noapara, leaving 6 passengers including the driver dead on the spot. Of the six deceased, four people were indentified immediately.
They were : Utpal Raha, 45, son of Dilip Raha of Naldha Maubhog area of Fakirhat, Nayan Dutta, 25, son of Jagadish Dutta of the same area, Abdul Hai, 55, son of Ohiduzzaman of Chaksi Bazar of Shrifaltala union of Rampal upazila and Nazrul Islam Sheikh, 50, son of Montaz Sheikh of South Khanpur area of Bagerhat Sadar.
The injured passenger named Nur Mohammad, 60, was admitted to Fakirhat Hospital. Mollahat Highway Camp OC Sheikh Abul Hasan said the bodies would be handed over to the families after autopsy. Police nabbed the 20 years old truck driver Osman Gani, he added.
