Taliban say have ‘no ceasefire plans’ in Afghanistan

The Taliban Monday denied agreeing to any ceasefire in Afghanistan after rumours swirled of a potential deal that would see a reduction in fighting after more than 18 years of war.
“In the past few days, some media have been releasing untrue reports about a ceasefire… The fact is that, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has no ceasefire plans,” the Taliban said in a statement.

US civil rights icon John Lewis announces cancer diagnosis

Civil rights icon and US House Representative John Lewis announced on Sunday he had been diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer.
The diagnosis followed a “routine medical visit,” Lewis, a 79-year-old Democrat who has repeatedly sparred with President Donald Trump, said in a statement, adding that he would seek treatment while continuing to represent his Georgia district.

5 killed in north China coal mine accident

Five people were killed in a coal mine accident in north China’s Shanxi Province on Sunday, local authorities said Monday. A landslide occurred around midnight in a coking coal mine owned by the Datong Coal Mine Group Co., Ltd. in the city of Shuozhou, trapping six people, said the city’s publicity department. Those trapped in the mine were rescued and sent to a local hospital after the accident. Five of them died in the hospital and the other is in stable condition.

Philippine typhoon death toll rises to 47, 9 still missing

The official death toll from Typhoon Phanfone has risen to 47 and is likely to keep rising as nine more persons are reported missing, the government said on Monday.. In its updated report, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the dead were recorded in four regions in the central Philippines and the northeastern tip of Mindanao island in the southern Philippines.
