BSTI fines Taka 3.85 lakh from 33 consumers’ shops

The regional office of the Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institutions (BSTI) has expedited drives against the marketing of fruits mixed with formalin and other harmful chemical preservatives and fined around Taka 3.85 lakh in different areas of Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions during last December. According to the officials concerned, the BSTI with assistance of the respective district administration conducted 16 mobile courts in different district and upazila markets of Rajshahi, Naogaon, Natore, Sirajgonj, Bogra, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, Joypurhat and Nilphammari districts.They lodged 33 cases against 33 business establishments on various charges like mixing of formalin in various high valued fruits like orange, grapes and cherry fruit and hydrous in molasses together with violation of the BSTIs rules and regulations.The courts realized Taka 3.85 lakh from the shops as fine and disposed of the cases on the spot.
2600 blankets distributed in Chuadanga
CHUADANGA: A total of 2,600 blankets were distributed among the poor and cold-stricken people at Chuadanga Sadar Upazila on Thursday. Whip of Jatiya Sangsad Solaiman Hoque Joarder distributed the blankets as the chief at a function on the Upazila Parishad premises with Chuadanga Sadar UNO K.M Manunuzzaman in the chair.The function was addressed ,among others, by Chuadanga Sadar upazila Chairman Ashadul Haque Biswas and vice-chairmen Azizul Haque Hazrat and Kohinoor Begum, reports BSS.
27 Jamaatmen sued over hartal violence

Police on Thursday night filed a case against 27 leaders and activist of Jamaat-e-Islami on charge voplence in Kuyada bazar area in Jessore Sadar upazila during Wednesday’s countrywide hartal enforced by the party. Sub-inspector Nazir Ahmed of Kotowali police station filed the case against the 27 Jamaat men.Police said the Jamaat men vandilised vehicles on Jessore-Keshabpur road during hartal on Wednesdays night. Meanwhile police arrested Jamaat activist Abdul Gofur Gazi in this connection.
1 hurt in gunfight over control of cattle market
One person was injured in a gunfight between two groups of the ruling Awami League over taking control of a cattle market at Bagachra in Sharsha upazila of the district on Thursday night. Police sources said a clash ensued between supporters of Awami League-backed Bagachra union parishad chairman Yeasin Kabir Bakul, also general secretary of the union unit of the party, and Abdul Latif, publicity secretary of the unit, over taking control of Satmail Cattle Market in the upazila on Monday. Police arrested two people along with three bombs from the spot. Later police arrested UP chairman Bakul on the following day. Angered by Bakul’s arrest, local people put up barricade on the Jessore-Satkhira Road, demanding his release, disrupting traffic , reports UNB.
Man held with arms in Rajbari
RAJBARI: Police arrested a man along with firearms and ammunition from a Dhaka-bound bus at Daulatdia ferry terminal here early Friday. The arrested was identified as Sabuj, son of Enayet Bepari of Laxmipur in Noakhali district.Nasirullah, officer-in-charge of Goalanda ghat police station, said police during a regular check in a Dhaka-bound ‘Shohagh Paribahan’ bus from Benapole recovered two pistols, 11 rounds of bullet and four magazines searching the body of Sabuj in the dead of night. Later they arrested Sabuj in this connection.A case was field with Goalanda ghat thana in this connection, reports UNB.
2 held with 1 lakh Indian rupees in C’nawabganj

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested two people along with one lakh Indian rupees at Monakasha in Shibganj upazila on Thursday. The arrestees were identified as Sadequl Islam, 30, son of Zillur Rahman of Mobarakpur Upatala village, and Mukul Mia, 30, son of Shahab Uddin of Barorshia village in the upazila. Acting on secret information, a team of BGB-9 intercepted a motorcycle in the area and recovered one lakh Indian rupees after searching their motorbike around 1:45 pm, said Commanding Officer of BGB-9 Lieutenant Colonel Abu Jafar Sheikh Mohamamd Bazlur Rahman.
